Leg swelling can make shoes feel tight by afternoon, leave sock marks at night, and turn a short walk into a painful chore. Knowing how to treat leg swelling starts with recognizing that swelling is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Sometimes it follows a long flight, a hot day, or hours spent sitting. Elevate your legs correctly
Raise your legs above heart level for 15 to 30 minutes, several times a day if possible. Lying on a couch with feet on a low ottoman may feel comfortable, but it may not provide enough elevation to improve fluid return. Use pillows or lie down in a position that allows your ankles and calves to rest higher than your chest.
Elevation can be particularly useful after work, travel, or periods of standing. It is a symptom-relief measure, though, not a substitute for identifying the cause of ongoing swelling.
Keep your calf muscles moving
Your calf muscles act like a pump for circulation. Walking, gentle ankle circles, heel raises, and flexing your feet while seated can encourage blood and fluid to move upward. During a road trip or flight, stand and walk when it is safe to do so, ideally every hour or two.
For many people, regular movement is more helpful than one intense workout followed by a day of sitting.
