What Is Superficial Venous Thrombosis?

Superficial venous thrombosis, or as it is more commonly known SVT, happens when a blood clot shapes in a superficial vein (a vein that is near to the skin). The clot may fully occlude the vein, which means it completely stops blood flow through the vein, or only results into partial occlusion. Partial occlusion may cause turbulence of the blood, which might  in turn result into more blood to clot and exacerbate the condition. SVT may be an acute condition or chronic and should not be confused with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a life-threatening condition that affects deeper veins.

SVT may shape spontaneously or may be inherited, and there are a number of other risk factors for SVT. Risk factors include:

  • Trauma to a vein caused by an IV or a surgical procedure such as Radio-frequency vein closure, Phlebectomy, or sclerotherapy
  • Hormone therapy (HT), birth control pills, or pregnancy
  • Smoking, especially combined with birth control pills
  • Obesity or being overweight
  • Some hyper-coagulable conditions, which may be genetic or acquired
  • Prolonged immobility, including sitting for long periods of time
  • Chronic Venous Insufficiency and Varicose Veins

Signs & Symptoms of Superficial Vein Thrombosis

The most common symptoms of SVT, which can also be called phlebitis, are pain, swelling, redness of the skin, tenderness, or warmth or firmness around the affected area.

To treat SVT, your Encino vein specialist will operate a physical exam and review of the medical history, along with an ultrasound. An ultrasound is consist of using a specialized device that emits sound waves, making us able to “see” the vein through the skin and arrive at a highly accurate diagnosis.

SVT Vein Treatment in Encino, CA

SVT may develop over the course of a few hours to a few days and normally resolves within a few weeks. SVT may get better on its own, but it can return later on.

If SVT shows up in a smaller vein, we may suggest at-home remedies like over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs, warm compresses, or simply the passage of time. If it forms in a larger vein, we may also suggest prescription anticoagulants (blood thinners). only then, we start to monitor the area with an ultrasound for the reason of tracking changes in the condition. In case of  a chronic or more intense condition of SVT, minimally invasive surgical treatment such as phlebectomy or radiofrequency closure to close the problem veins is recommended.

SVT can be a hurtfulandbothering condition. L.A vascular specialists are designed to assist you in tackling these issues. We take great pride in providing a wide range of convenient, minimally invasive vein treatments at our Glendale, Encino, and Beverly Hills vein centers, and we work with each patient to determine the ideal path forward for your lifestyle.
