What is Ultrasound . What are some common uses of the procedure?

Ultrasound produces image of the veins in the body by using and picking up sounds waves. It is often used to identify blood clots, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other arterial and venous problems. Ultrasound is not harmful as it does not use ionizing radiation with is known to be harmful. The Ultrasound process is safe and painless. The Ultrasound imaging is also referred to as sonography/scanning. The process is that gel is placed on the skin, a small probe called a transducer is used when the sound waves travel through the gel into the body and bounce back the probe collects the bounced back sounds. The computer is used to create images from the sound waves collected. As Ultrasound use real-time images they can show the movement of the body’s internal organs as well as blood slowing through the vessels.

How should I prepare?

No specific preparation is required except for some occasions when you are advised not to eat or drink anything for six to eight hours. You are often advised to wear comfortable clothes as you will be asked to wear a gown.
